Tacit knowledge is unspoken knowledge. This is knowledge that is not easily captured (if at all) in traditional databases, and long narrative documents are too cumbersome for efficient knowledge management and transfer. But tacit knowledge is what separates the seasoned expert from the entry level newcomer. Due to its non-linear nature and natural authoring methodology, Semantica is the first application to dramatically lower the barrier to capturing this knowledge and preserving it in a re-distributable manner.

Semantica knowledge structures are an ideal vehicle for presenting explicit knowledge in context. Database content can be automatically incorporated into a semantic network. Knowledge objects, including any image, video or audio clip, sound file, spreadsheet, or other file, can be attached to concepts or relationships by drag and drop. By attaching the explicit knowledge objects where contextually relevant, Semantica becomes a powerful tool for tying together tacit and explicit knowledge.

Semantica offers the user the unique ability to build a visual network of information without relying on a pre-defined Schema or Ontology. People in any discipline, whether it is science, technology, parts, equipment, social spaces, thoughts or ideas, can make good use of Semantica. Data can be derived from any source, ranging from field notes or phone conversations to documents and tables.

Semantica's abstract data model can be used to fuse data from virtually any structured data repository or legacy database into one, consistent view of the data. Unlike traditional "relational databases" where the relationships between data points are "inferred", in Semantica, those relationships are made explicit and users can quickly and easily see connections between data from all sources.

Semantica provides visual, non-linear views of data based on the actual relationships between the data. The Semantica interface is simple and easy to use. It was originally designed to be utilized by students. The requirement was to have an interface that, with minimal training, users would be able to browse previously added data, as well as add new data. The interface utilizes extensive "drag and drop" technology to allow a user to highlight information from one document, drag it into Semantica, and drop the data to either create a new concept or attach supporting information to an already existing concept. This drag and drop functionality also works throughout every menu in the application.

Semantica offers multiple options for integration with other tools to assist the user in creating knowledge. These tools include Natural Language Processing Question and Answer, as well as automatic Entity and Event extraction, the ability to automatically display and export data to multiple Geographic Information Systems, (GIS), perform searches of the Internet based on network, query enterprise or legacy structured databases, as well as interaction with MediaWiki sites such as Wikipedia. In addition, custom tools can be created with a minor amount of programming. Semantica offers a rich API for extension and additional integration.
